Hello, and Welcome to my website! 

   Mapping Freedom is an undergraduate REU which is a project conducted by Southern Mississippi University to track the movements and lives of freed slaves in the wake of the Civil War and Reconstruction in the state of Mississippi. Through I am not personally from the state of Mississippi, as someone from the American South the message of Mapping Freedom deeply resonates with me because all to often this critical part of American history is understudied and taken for granted despite molding racial relations in the South for the next 100 years. Mapping Freedom seeks to fill this gap in our history by using a combination of both traditional historical research and digitization and GIS to provide a more holistic view of this period in American history.
